17 – Fermat’s last theorem

We watched this video in its entirety (2 periods) in geometry. Such a lovely story — watching it always makes me tear up. I think the kids really gained a deeper respect for the beauty of a “rigorous proof” and the interplay among different fields of mathematics. It was cool for them to hear new stuff, like: Taniyama-Shimura conjecture, Frey’s Epsilon conjecture, Iwasawa theory, Galois representations, elliptical curves and modular forms.

I think they’ll remember the name Andrew Wiles from now on.
